Annually on the first Saturday of May, thousands celebrate National Scrapbook Day (NSD)! Research shows this holiday was first recognized in 1994 – 23 years ago! While it is called “National” Scrapbook Day, the holiday is recognized around the world. Why should NSD be celebrated? We think all cool things should be celebrated and that includes scrapbooking. Scrapbooking dates back to the 15th century. It is a method that preserves family history, personal mementos, photographs, newspaper clippings, artwork and other memorabilia. Scrapbooking can take many, many, MANY different forms - - it isn’t just about 12” x 12” layouts. ![]() This year, we are celebrating NSD with Annette Green, Special Projects Designer with Graphic 45. Annette is hugely talented (just take a look at her blog filled all sorts of crafty goodness). Annette will be teaching three classes over NSD weekend. All three classes focus on creating stunning paper craft creations with Graphic 45 papers that can be used for scrapbooking and keeping mementos and journaling. Click here to see images of all three of the projects and for class/registration details. The Saturday class includes lunch and a chance to win an amazing Graphic 45 prize package valued at $100! Visit our Facebook page for a video that shows (posted on 4/22/17) how gorgeous and intricate the Portrait of a Lady Interactive Album is. All the projects are stunning, and you truly need to see them in person to appreciate them (so stop by P&P and check them out)! Lastly, we wanted to provide some inspiration on the various ways you can “scrapbook” – again it isn’t just about the 12” x 12” layouts (although, those are really cool too!). Have a great day and enjoy living (and keeping) your memories!

We’ve all read that coloring and “adult coloring books” are good for the mind and stress-relief, but what should you do with your coloring books filled colored pages? Are you the type of person that prefers to make “useful” crafts? Did you know that you can turn your colored masterpieces into items like coasters, furniture and more, Today we are going to share some projects to get those beautiful colored pages out of your coloring books and into fun projects that can be used and enjoyed. Coasters Grab some tiles at the local hardware store (they are less than 20 cents a piece), some Mod Podge and cut down your coloring pages, and with this tutorial or this tutorial you will have a set of coasters in no time. Finish up the edges of your tile by applying some Inka Gold by Viva Decor (available at P&P). The Inka Gold will give it a gorgeous metallic finish. Upcycle some furniture While hitting up the local garage sales this spring look for furniture pieces that could use a little upcycling. With some fresh paint and your colored pages added to it you will have a masterpiece in no time. Mixed Media Projects Cut out shapes from your colored images and work them into a mixed media canvas or art journal page. Grab a Wink of Stella glitter brush pen (available at P&P) to add some shimmer to your artwork. Wrap a gift Use your colored pages to wrap a small gift, cut out a piece to adorn a tag or card front. Note, you don't have to completely color the image - the white space can add visual interest to your creation. Create a floral arrangement Create a floral arrangement that even those without green thumbs can keep alive. Cut petal and flower shapes from your colored pages and glue on sticks you can gather from your yard. Pop them into a vase (again, a great item to pick up at garage sales or a thrift store). Emergency Kit for Your Purse Grab an Altoids tin or similar small container and upcycle it with your colored image. Fill it with a needle and thread, dental flosser, a mint or two, Shout Wipe, hair tie, bobby pin, antibacterial wipe, Advil or similar, bandaids, safety pins and more. Get the kids involved and make a few of these to give aunts and grandmas for Mother's Day. Make a Bookmark This is a simple craft that you can involve the kids with also. Cut a narrow strip, punch a hole in the top and add a tassel. If you have a rounded corner punch, you can use it on all four corners of your bookmark. Laminate it if you would like. Make a Decorative Dish This is another great idea for Mother's Day! Grab a small dish or two, mod podge your colored image to the dish. While not safe for food and handwashing, it would make a cute ring dish on a bedside table, perfect to hold keys in the entry way and more. We hope you have gathered some inspiration on ways to use your colored images. Have you taken a page out of your coloring book and turned it into something else? We would love to see! For our Christian Customers it is a good time to reflect and think about one’s devotion and faith with it being the last week of Lent - Holy Week. One thing a lot of Christians, especially the crafty ones, are exploring are Bible Journaling entries that reflect the message of the selected scripture through artistic expression. Here at Palette & Paper we love fostering one’s faith through creating, and have a great selection of stencils, stamps, stickers, paper and more that can be used in Bible Journaling. Also, we host a monthly Bible Journaling session lead by our Creative Team Member, Cindy. During this 90-minutes per month, Cindy guides the group through a Bible Journaling entry and educates participants on various techniques. Be sure to click here to get signed-up for our second quarter of Bible Journaling. If you need some ideas on how to get started with Bible Journaling (keep in mind, this doesn’t have to be done in a bible - you can use a journal, hymnal and more), read our blog post on the subject. If you need inspiration for a Holy Week or Easter themed page look no further than below. Below is a tutorial on how to sketch "Risen". It would be great incorporated into a Bible Journaling page to celebrate Easter. Click here for other great "doodle" tutorials. Below is a reading plan for this week and scripture to focus on for your Bible Journaling. We wish all of our customers, of all beliefs and faith, a wonderful week and weekend! Thanks for reading and we hope to see you at P&P soon (please note, P&P will be closed Friday, April 14 and Saturday, April 15). Easter is only a week and a half away, so it is a great time to finish up those Easter cards to give family and friends, create a few adorable Easter goodies, and make some decorations for your home. Below is a round-up of some of the cute Easter and Spring themed projects that have caught my eye recently. Put a bird on it! You could make the paper version to use as place cards for Easter dinner or as a tag on an Easter gift/basket. The felt version could be worn as a spring brooch or add a few to a spring wreath for your front door. The possibilities are nearly endless with these adorable birds. For a template, click here. Get crafty with the kids and create Easter décor in the meantime! Look how cute this egg wreath is! The patterned paper paired with the solid makes for an adorable layout, or have your kids decorate solid colored eggs and make a wreath with those. Great variations of this would be to use solid color paper/cardstock and “mix media” it up with distress inks, acrylic paint, Nuvo Crystal dots and more or create one from gelli prints that you make on a gelli plate. Grab your gesso, distress paints, gel medium and stamps to create artistic eggs for décor. For a tutorial on how to make these awesome eggs, click here. Stripes for Spring. Make a cute front for a card or piece of artwork to hang by using strips of paper or washi tape. You can easily create striped backgrounds that can be turned into eggs, bunnies and more. Make a garland to hang. Create an adorable bunny garland to hang and don’t forget the cute fluffy bunny tails! Send some Easter love. We have a great selection of stamps and dies for you to use in your creations. Here is some inspiration using the stamps and dies shown above. Additional inspiration:
